Thinking of Frida by Holley Bakich
Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is a big influence on my artwork. I have been refining my beadwork to produce more realistic images, and I find portraiture to be a good exercise. Here, I’m thinking of Frida using a design of her invention — the “window” in my forehead. I also have employed lace such as that which she used in some of her self-portraiture and other symbols. The “sugar skulls” suspended from the cross memorialize Frida, her husband Diego Rivera, and my relatives who have died. The cross shape is my homage to roadside memorials and the Catholicism of the Mexican nation another of my art influences.
